What is receiving and putaway?

Receiving and putaway are the warehouse steps that bring a supplier’s delivery into stock and make it available to sell. Receiving checks the delivery against the purchase order and packing slip and records what actually arrived in the ERP; putaway then moves the goods to their bin locations.

How it works

The receiving record is what accounts payable later compares with the supplier’s invoice in a three-way match. Damage or shortages are noted on the carrier’s bill of lading before the driver leaves, and an ASN, when the supplier sends one, lets the team receive by scanning cartons.

Receiving and putaway example

A delivery of 20 cartons is received against a PO for 24. The receiver records 20, which keeps the remaining 4 open on the PO, and the putaway team moves the cartons to their bins before the afternoon picks.
